As the summer of 2009 wore on, and gas prices appeared to be back on a slow climb, we gave serious consideration
to purchasing a motorcycle for fairweather commuting. The electric truck was completed, but it's range is
limited to local driving only.
With the need to drive further and maintain low operating and fueling costs, a motorcycle started
looking more and more attractive.
The decision was made to purchase a pair of bikes, a sport and a classic/cruiser. We purchased a Kawasaki
Ninja 250R, and the Eliminator 125 you see here. Already owning a Kawasaki Jetski (and a John Deere lawn tractor also powered by a Kawasaki engine), we were already familiar with the performance of their engines. The Eliminator will be modded to be a practical, comfortable, and high-mileage three-season work commuter. The top speed of the Eliminator is stated in magazine articles to be 62mph, and Kawasaki claims over 90mpg on their website (Kawasaki.com/mpg). As it is a standard classic/cruiser design, it is an aerodynamic brick, but the more comfortable seating position, ease of riding, and what Kawasaki calls "friendly power delivery" (read: not much power delivery) make it a great starter bike. Our goals for the Eliminator are quite simple: Keep the miles-per-gallon over 75, raise the top speed above 65mph to make it suitable for highway use, enhance it's safety, and enjoy the riding experience while saving money at the gas pump. General updates to the project are below. For more details about performance and modifications, links are in the upper right. 6/1/'10: Silver is now in use regularly, and the modifications will be slowing down on this bike. Performance: top speed: 66mph (drag limited) · economy: 78mpg. |
